Som en del av invigningen av Steneby Konsthalls utställning ’Embodiment’ välkomnar vi en performance av Leo Correia de Verdier, en av världens främsta symaskinsmusiker.
Symaskinen har sedan den uppfanns i slutet på 1700-talet blivit ett av världens vanligaste instrument. Miljoner människor spelar dagligen på sina symaskiner, men, kanske på grund av instrumentets låga status, har få av dem tagit sitt musicerande till en professionell nivå och presenterat det för publik. Stygn är skrivet som en serie improvisationsramar som kan varieras och kombineras på många olika sätt, men alltid presenteras som samma uppsättning idéer.
Leo Correia de Verdier är utbildad på bl.a. kungliga musikhögskolan. Med hjälp av modern teknik som datorer och sequencers har hon utvecklat symaskinsmusicerandet i nya riktningar och tagit den till en helt ny nivå. Leo spelar på en Brother LS-2125, en traditionell elektrisk symaskin med ett ganska kraftfullt och slamrigt sound, som man oftast förknippar med större maskiner. Hennes musik är stram, med skiftande rytmiska mönster och en detaljrik ljudvärld.

As part of the opening of Steneby Konsthall’s exhibition ’Embodiment’, we welcome a performance by Leo Correia de Verdier, one of the world’s foremost sewing machine musicians.
Since it was invented in the late 18th century, the sewing machine has become one of the world’s most popular musical instruments. Every day, millions of people make music with their sewing machines, but few have taken their musicianship to a professional level and presented it to an audience, perhaps due to the low status of the instrument.
Stygn is written as a series of improvisation-frames or basic ideas, that can be varied to a large extent, but always appear as the same set.
Leo Correia de Verdier is trained at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Using modern technology, computers and sequencers she has developed sewing machine music in new directions, taking it to a whole new level. Leo plays a Brother LS-2125, a traditional electric sewing machine with a rather powerful and clattery sound otherwise associated with heavier machines. Her music is highly structured, with shifting rhythmic patterns and a sound world rich in detail.
